Despite their flaws, an endorsement from a Hollywood A-lister like Lupita Nyong’o means a great deal to Ugandan women.

Nyong’o who lived in Kampala once as a budding actress in the 2000s and recently headlined Disney film Queen of Katwe has hyped praise on Ugandan women and the Katwe slum saying both are really as vibrant and colourful as they look on screen.

” The women in Uganda are very elegant.”

It is that way in Katwe,” the Oscar winning actress laughed in an interview with SkyNews’ Claire Gregory on Wednesday.

“I have not gasped looking out the window as much as I did when I was in Kampala because there is just an effortless sense of style.

“It’s not studied, it’s just the way they are,” she said.

Lupita also said she read less than ten pages of the script for her latest film before agreeing to star in it.

Nyong’o plays her mother, Nakku Harriet, who is doing her best to provide for her children after their father dies.

“Mira Nair, the director of the film who I’ve known for a very long time, emailed me with the script and said I had this written with you in mind, please say you’ll play Harriet,” Nyong’o explained.

“I got to reading it and less than ten pages in I put it down and I responded saying I must make this film, because what I found within those pages were characters that were relatable and complex, layered and had agency.”
