After the sudden death of former Attorney General Peter Nyombi last night, some members of his family have cited foul play, saying Nyombi complained of stomach pains shortly after eating at a family gathering.
Nyombi died Sunday at SAS Clinic on Bombo Road, in Kampala where he was taken by family members.
A relative of Nyombi said the former minister was attending a family meeting at Buziga, near Kampala, before complaining that he was unwell.
The family members then rushed him to the clinic between 8 pm and 9pm on Sunday where he died a few moments later.
Another source however said that Nyombi had been in and out of hospital for some time.
His younger brother, Ambassador Henry Mayega told local media that Nyombi developed sudden breathing complications.
“We were together at my home and he started losing breath. We rushed him to SAS Hospital where he died. They are yet to conduct a post-mortem to know the cause of death,” Mr Mayega said told Daily Monitor.
Nyombi, 64, replaced Prof. Kiddu Makubuya. He served from May 2011 until March 2015.
He was replaced Mr Fred Ruhindi, in a Cabinet reshuffle. A year later, Mr Ruhindi was also dropped and replaced by Mr William Byaruhanga, the current attorney general.
It is not clear if there were family wrangles in which Nyombi was involved but a close family member suspects that the former lawyer and politician could have been a victim of poisoning.
Former FDC President Gen Mugisha Muntu extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
“I have heard of the passing of Hon. Peter Nyombi, former Attorney General of Uganda. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones. May God strengthen you all through this undoubtedly difficult time,” said Gen Muntu.
