Court Trial Fails; Dr. Stella Nyanzi Remanded

Dr. Stella Nyanzi has been remanded to Luzira prison this morning again.

The Makerere University research fellow is accused Luzira of harassing the President Yoweri Museveni and his late mother.

The trial was scheduled for this morning but the presiding magistrate, Robert Mukanza, that the trial magistrate, Gladys Kamasanyu is away on official duties and it on this basis that he sent Dr. Nyanzi back to Luzira until 19th December.

Dr Nyanzi is charged with cyber harassment and offensive communication which contravene sections of the Penal Code Act.

This comes after Dr. Stella Nyanzi refused to apply for bail and chose to stay in custody as government carried out investigations through her lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde.

Prosecution submitted that Dr. Stella Nyanzi has a tendency of using her social media platforms to write out obscenities and insults and in this case particularly, she used her Facebook to offend the President of Uganda.

However, Dr. Nyanzi insisted that she is a writer that uses all sorts of metaphors to put her messages across.

She denied the offences and dared the president to show up in court and pin her for the alleged offences.

“I don’t understand how Yoweri Museveni has been offended by my Facebook posts. I would like him to testify to the extent of offence I have put upon him than my mare writing. I would like to see him testify and look me in the eye and say, Stella Nyanzi you offended me, I read Facebook posts and I find them offensive,” Dr Nyanzi said.

Court had various politicians that were there to support Dr. Nyanzi including Dr. Kiiza Besigye.
