Government has nominated 14 people to sit on the Constitutional Review Commission to consider various constitutional reforms.
The nomination is contained in a letter to President Museveni by Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister, recommending the nominees for consideration.
In the letter, Gen Otafiire recommends the former Attorney General, Prof Khiddu Makubuya, to head the commission deputised by former Speaker of Parliament Francis Butagira.
“Your Excellency, as you are aware, government has committed itself on several occasions to establish a Constitutional Review Commission as a more elaborate process of amending the Constitution. This process will take into account the many constitution reform proposals that have been received by government,” Gen Otafiire wrote.
In a letter to the President, Otafiire notes that there was an urgent need to commence the Constitutional Review process in order to address issues at hand.
“Government is committed to establishing a constitutional Review Commission to handle the proposals that were not included in the Constitutional Amendment Act 2015,” reads Otafiire’s letter in part.
According to Otafiire, the nomination considered regional representation, from the five regions of Buganda, Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western. It also considered educational background, qualifications, diverse experience and expertise.
Those nominated include; Prof Khiddu Makubuya, Francis K Butagira, Nusura Tiperu, Rev Amos Turyahabwe, Paul Wanyoto, Dr Diana Musoke, Dan Wandera Ogalo, Richard Angualia, Charles Elem Ogwal, Lillian Aber, Kamdi Byonabye, Ms Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, Martha Katuntu and Kabogozza Musoke.
