The Uganda Police Bomb Squad yesterday recovered a hand grenade that was buried in the land along the Uganda – Rwanda border by a former deceased combatant.
The Police Bomb Squad was led to the scene in Kyase B village in the sub county of Buhara close to the Rwanda border by Assistant Inspector of Police Bafokurera Politaz after getting a tip off.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesman Elly Maate told this reporter that the land was recently acquired by a new owner Sino Mineral Investment Ltd, who are doing mineral exploration in the area.
However before handing over the land, the former owner Seperanza Kajura confided in them that her late husband Suleiman Kajura had told her that he had buried the bomb in the land.
Kajura who served in the army during the 1970s but retired during the current government died 15 years ago.
It was on receipt of this information that the new owners of the land reported to the Police in Kabale who sought the expert intervention from the Bomb Squad to remove it.
Maate said that the hand grenade which was wrapped in a polythene bag was recovered from underground where it had been buried and was immediately detonated.
“We as Police are thankful to the old woman who volunteered information about the bomb which needed expert police to remove it without harming any one” Maate said.
In August this year, the Police recovered 8 rusty guns at a building site in Mwanjari in Kabale Municipality at the home of former FRONASA fighter James Karambuzi after builders found the weapons buried in the ground where they were digging a foundation for construction of new house.
