Arua Municipality MP Kassiano Wadri, who was sworn-in yesterday, has said that security operatives found him with again at the time of his arrest two weeks ago.
Mr Wadri who floored both NRM and FDC candidates in the hotly contested race to replace slain legislator Col Ibrahim Abiriga told Mr Solomon Arinaitwe of the Daily Monitor newspaper that he acquired the pistol legally, adding that there were no chances for the state to charge him with terrorism.
Mr Wadri said that he surrendered the firearm when security operatives broke into his hotel room at pacific hotel in Arua.
“I was the first person to tell them that I was armed and I withdrew my pistol and gave it to them. When I told them that I am armed, one policeman came and asked how I had got a gun,” he said in the interview.
Mr Wadri who says he has owned the pistol for the past 20 year renews his licence every January at Arua Police Station.
Mr Wadri was voted MP in absentia after security forces arrested him alongside Bobi Wine and several others who were on his campaign trail.
Mr Wadri polled 6,528 votes, beating NRM’s Nusura Tiperu who came second (4,763 votes) followed by Independent candidate Robert Ejiku in the August 15 ballot. Forum for Democratic Change party’s Bruce Musema came fourth with 1,372 votes.
Meanwhile, Mr Wadri has been ordered to stay away from his constituency and to refrain from holding any celebratory processions.
If there is anything that necessitates his presence in the three months, the judge said, he must ask for court permission.
This comes after he was charged alongside 32 others with treason after they allegedly launched an attack on President Museveni’s convoy smashing the hind screen of one of his vehicles.
