In a move set to boost entrepreneurship and economic growth, the Ministry of Finance has proposed a three-year income tax exemption for Ugandans starting new businesses. This proposal, which was tabled before Parliament, is expected to encourage more local investment and support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they establish themselves in the market.

According to the Finance Ministry, the initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on startups, allowing them to reinvest profits into business expansion, job creation, and innovation. The proposal is in line with the government’s broader strategy to foster industrialization and self-reliance among local investors.

Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, while presenting the proposal, emphasized that the tax holiday would provide a significant relief to Ugandans who often struggle with high startup costs and limited access to capital. “This tax exemption will give new businesses a fair chance to grow and become competitive before they start meeting their tax obligations,” the minister stated.

The initiative has been widely welcomed by the business community, with many entrepreneurs expressing optimism about the potential impact on their operations. Economic analysts also view the tax holiday as a strategic move to stimulate investment in key sectors such as manufacturing, agribusiness, and technology.

Parliament is now set to deliberate on the proposal, and if approved, the policy will take effect in the upcoming financial year. The government is also expected to outline clear eligibility criteria to ensure that the tax exemption benefits genuine startups and contributes to sustainable economic development.

This development comes at a time when Uganda is making concerted efforts to improve its business environment and attract both local and foreign investments. The tax holiday is expected to be a game-changer in fostering a more vibrant and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country.
