The hope for a better future relies on the availability and quality of education. Unfortunately, many children in Uganda face significant obstacles that prevent them from accessing this essential right. The WEHAT Foundation, a Ugandan non-profit organization, is actively working to tackle this issue through a combination of community involvement, innovative fundraising efforts and a strong commitment to empowering the next generation. The WEHAT Foundation has organized a Charity Golf Tournament and Photo Exhibition Fundraiser, set for 5 July 2024, to raise awareness and funds to address the challenges to accessing education
Education in Uganda remains out of reach for many children due to socio-economic challenges despite being a recognized right. UNICEF Uganda reports that while there has been significant progress, with around 80 percent of children aged 6 to 12 attending primary school, disparities remain. Child marriage, teenage pregnancy, school fees and a lack of quality education continue to thwart the dreams of many young Ugandans, especially girls. The statistics are stark: costs associated with education cause 60 percent of students to leave school, and teenage pregnancy accounts for 8 percent of girls dropping out.
Founded in 2020, the WEHAT Foundation aims to create a poverty-free and child-empowered society in Uganda. Guided by the principles of equity, inclusion, and accountability, WEHAT focuses on five pillars: welfare, education, healthcare, advocacy and talent development. Their mission is clear – to break down the barriers to education and to provide the necessary support for underprivileged children to thrive.
The upcoming event, themed “Empowering Education through the Lens,” promises to be a dynamic and impactful fundraiser. The Charity Golf Tournament, organized in partnership with the Uganda Golf Club, will attract players from all walks of life – from club members to business leaders and government officials. This inclusive approach ensures a broad base of support and visibility for the cause.
Complementing the tournament is a compelling photo exhibition featuring stunning photographs captured by Molly Kabamoli. Under the guidance of renowned photojournalist Faith Ariho, Molly ventured into Bwindi National Park and its surrounding community to photograph the majestic gorillas and the breathtaking landscapes of Uganda. These images not only showcase the natural beauty of Uganda but also highlight the potential for tourism as a vital part of the country’s economy.
The photographs, to be auctioned during the event, provide a unique perspective on Uganda’s rich wildlife and vibrant communities. They aim to evoke emotions and inspire generosity, leveraging the power of visual storytelling to communicate the importance of education and the potential for tourism. By bidding on these photographs, participants will not only be supporting educational initiatives but also promoting Uganda’s tourism potential, fostering a deeper appreciation for the country’s natural and cultural heritage.
Community support is crucial in addressing the educational challenges in Uganda. The WEHAT Foundation’s event is designed not just as a fundraiser but as a platform to galvanize community action. The fundraiser aims to raise UGX 150 million, which will be allocated to several key initiatives:
- Paying school fees for 20 students for a year, ensuring they can continue their education without financial hindrances.

- Supporting various educational programs and activities, including providing learning materials and facilitating second-chance or alternative learning opportunities for out-of-school children.
