Kanungu Youth Council, an Organisation of amiable youth from Kanungu District are yet to start reaping big from the enormous presidential support towards the establishment of a modern fish farming project.

The Maizimera based project is worth Shs 320m and was recently launched by the Fountain of Honour at a spectacular event in the district. Kanungu District Youth Fish Project is managed by 16 youth District Leaders, with the Patron Ampumuza Dixon Kagurusi and Resident District Commissioner (RDC) who gives them advise.

The purpose of the initiative was to start holistic developmental projects in Kanungu District with a focus on job creation and improving the welfare of the youth and the people of Kanungu at large, a move that saw all Kanungu District Members of Parliament, the LC 5 Chairperson Canon Josephine Kasya and the Diocese of Kinkizi Bishop Dan Zoreka attend the event in person.

Kanungu Youths had carefully carried a baseline survey in Kanungu District and established that the fish farming project was one of the projects that could transform the welfare of the youths because of it’s multiplier effect by providing a chain of employment opportunities from farming to marketing.

Ampumuza Dixon Kagurusi the Patron of the Kanungu District Youth Fish Project assured the President that they had engaged fish farming consultants who assured them that the project was going to be implemented using modern professional fish farming methods.

The President was impressed with the brilliance of the Kanungu Youth and agreed to fund the project and the President directed the State House Comptroller Lucy Nakyoobe to immediately find source of funding for Kanungu District Youth Fish Project as it came to be known at the time and work closely with the Youth Leaders to ensure that the project was implemented.

The team that consisted of Nakyoobe and youth Leadership immediately started serious work by assembling a team to ensure that the project was implemented since Ms Nakyoobe assured the team that the funds for the project had been secured.

In an interaction with the association leaders, there is an impressive development as the multi-million project nears completion.

According to Kagurusi said that the Hatchery area is complete, Machines for feeds have been installed delayed by transformers to have it connected to electricity.

This comment comes at the time when social media has been a wash of allegations claiming that the presidential efforts had been put to waste.

“You see, the fish project is run by Kanungu youth leaders, the controversy on social media comes from youth based in Kampala who wanted hijack the project. Kanungu district youth leaders formed a committee of 16 people who supervise the project.” The Patron said adding that the first harvest money was used to restalk the ponds. Second harvest is yet to take place and the money will be invested in sub counties.

Kagurusi however acknowledges that there is efforts by some politician s to demonize and politicize the entire initiative over individual gains a move that the leadership has vowed to fight till the objectives of initiative are achieved.
