Police in Kwania district, northern Uganda have arrested two women on allegations of defrauding people claiming to have the capacity to print currency notes.
The suspects are Semmy Ejang aka Semmy Opio Modek, the NRM Women League chairperson for Kwania district and one Gloria Kali Akello, all residents of Aduku Township cell in Teduka ward, Aduku town council.
They were arrested by police on allegations of printing money for aspiring candidates to be used to canvas for votes ahead of next year’s upcoming general elections.
Edith Basalirwa, the Kwania district police commander said the suspects defrauded Lydia Abuk, who represents persons with disability (PDWs) at Aduku Town Council out of Shs 3.5 million, and two other unidentified politicians from Inomo sub-county out of Shs 4.5 million.
The victims were duped to first make payment. Basalirwa said the duo is detained at Kwania Central police station and a case of obtaining money by false pretence is registered against them under SD ref. 13/4/8/2020 pending investigation.
“These women were conniving with some unknown thugs who we are looking for. They deceived victims that their money would be ‘multiplied’. They defrauded the politicians, and I think this group has defrauded very many people claiming that they print ‘real’ money,” said Basalirwa.
Abuk, one of the victims who is also vying for Kwania district LC V disabled representative, said she was conned after being promised that her money would be ‘multiplied’. Abuk added that she only realized that she has been duped when the women disappeared with the money.
Aduku LC I chairman, Jimmy Uhuru cautioned the public against being lured into illegal businesses that excite them thinking they would accumulate wealth in hours. He asked the public to be careful with fraudsters with swift profit-making deals yet their target is to defraud unsuspecting people.
