Kenya’s Second President Daniel arap Moi Dies Aged 95

Kenya’s second president Daniel Toroitich arap Moi is dead, President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced in a presidential proclamation.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his death, saying the nation had lost a “great man”.

Having been in office for about 24 years, Daniel arap Moi was Kenya’s loongest-serving President until he stepped down in 2002.

In 2004, Mr Moi asked for forgiveness from “those he had wronged”.

He was 95 years old and he has been battling sickness for the better part of 2019.

His death was confirmed by his press secretary Lee Njiru.

He passed away at on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

President Kenyatta has declared a period of mourning, including the flying of flags at half-mast, until a state funeral is held for Mr Moi. No date has been set for the funeral.

Mr Kenyatta said the continent was “immensely blessed by the dedication” of the late president, who spent “almost his entire adult life serving Kenya and Africa”.
