The former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, has said that his sanctioning by the US government is being propagated by a group of people who have disliked him for a long time and they are doing everything to end his life.
Speaking on Bukedde Radio on Monday evening, Gen Kayihura said his enemies always blamed him for the many murders and kidnaps in the country during his tenure and said the same group is now working to make him look like a criminal on the international stage.
“These people have been tarnishing my name even when I was still heading the Police. They accused me of committing several atrocities including promoting kidnaps and murders across the country. They used to shout my name but even after my departure. The same crimes still exist but I do not hear anyone blaming my successor Ochola. These people want to kill me,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Uganda, Ambassador Attilio Pacifici has backed the US sanctions against the former Police Chief, Gen. Kale Kayihura.
According to Pacifici, there is logic and principle in the visa and economic sanctions imposed against Kayihura, adding that even the EU would have acted the same if they had the evidence at the disposal of the US.
US Secretary of State last Friday announced that they had put economic sections and a travel ban on Gen Kayihura, for alleged human rights violations during his time as former Inspector General of Police.
In the radio interview, the former IGP also reiterated his earlier denial of the accusations.
“This is not only absolutely false but outrageous and infuriating, especially that these accusations and decisions have been made without according me an opportunity to respond to them, whereby I would give evidence to the contrary. The United States Government was known as a government that believed in due process, rule of law and democracy,” he said.
The former IGP, who was sacked in March last year, said that the US government did not accord him chance to defend himself.
“The United States Government was known as a government that believed in due process, rule of law and democracy. There was absolutely no due process accorded to me before false wild and defamatory statements about my person and my record were issued from Washington, without any bother to verify such allegations, which are in actual fact against the state of Uganda for which I was working,” Gen Kayihura said.
