Museveni to Meet University Staff Over Salary Enhancement

Representatives from nine Public Universities are expected to meet President Museveni to discuss issues related to their salary enhancement.

Highly placed sources indicate that representatives have received an invitation to meet the President at State House, Entebbe today.

Earlier this month, academic and non-teaching staff from all public universities in the country resolved to lay down their tools indefinitely until government releases all due and outstanding funds for their salary enhancement.

The strike followed an announcement by the Minister of Public Service, Mr Wilson Muruli Mukasa, who revealed government’s offer of Shs15b for salary enhancement for both categories of staff, starting in the second quarter (October to December) of the current financial year.

However, Dr Grace Lubaale, the chairperson of the Forum for Academic Staff in Public Universities (FASPU), said their strike would proceed as earlier planned until government releases all the Shs150b they are demanding in arrears and due payments.

“This is the last year for the implementation of the presidential directive which would make a professor, who is currently earning Shs9.6m, earn up to Shs15m. We shall not report for duty until this money is remitted to our accounts,” Dr Lubaale said while addressing a press conference eat Makerere University.

The meeting with the president is however expected to find a solution as new University academic year 2019/2020 started on August 3.
