Kampala socialite Sulaiman Kabangala Mbuga, alias SK Mbuga, could finally enjoy his freedom after it has emerged that he is set to be released from Al Awiir Central Jail on medical grounds.
This website has learnt that a judge in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ruled that SK Mbuga should be set free because of ill health.
Mbuga who has been held there for eight months was arrested in Dubai in January earlier this year on allegations of fraud together with his wife Angella Vivienne Chebet.
The couple was accused of fraudulent transfer of money amounting to 53m Kronor (about Shs23 billion) from a company account that Chebet was running with her 71-year- old Swedish boyfriend, Sten Heinsoo.
However, the whereabouts of Mrs. Chebet remain unclear. Chebet had been arrested and charged in a Swedish court in February last year but she later disappeared and ran back to Uganda.
Meanwhile Mbuga has had a life ban on travelling to UAE slapped on him. It also remains unclear whether he will be brought to Uganda or be handed over to Sweden to face other charges.
Mr Mbuga and his wife, Ms Viviene Chebet, are wanted in Sweden on allegations of defrauding a Swedish national.
If handed to Uganda, Mbuga will be smiling ear to ear since he wasn’t asked to refund the billions he is said to have obtained illegally.
