No Special Sitting To Honour Ex Attorney General Peter Nyombi, Here Is Why

The body of former Attorney General Peter Nyombi, who succumbed to heart-related complications, was today not taken to the parliament chambers for a special sitting in honour of the fallen lawyer.

The late Peter Nyombi’s body was only brought to parliament to lie in State for Members of Parliament and public to pay their last respect.

This is break from tradition as Parliament usually convenes special sittings for fallen sitting and former MPs to be eulogized.

Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda explained why there was no special sitting for the former government chief legal advisor.

“Because Parliament is in recess, it was decided by government and Parliament to come and pay tribute to him now when he is lying in State. When Parliament reconvenes, on the floor of Parliament, his colleagues and friends will be able to articulate their tributes to him highlighting his contributions,” Rugunda told journalists at parliament.

Who is Peter Nyombi

Nyombi  was born on April 23, 1954, to Mr and Mrs Kajja. His father was a teacher while his mother was a full-time housewife.

Nyombi attended Nakasongola Primary School where he  passed quite well and went to Kings College Budo for O – Level and A – Level.

In 1973, he joined Makerere University where he studied Law. He subsequently joined Law Development Centre and did his diploma in Law Practice.

In 1997, Nyombi joined the Ministry of Justice as a State Attorney, then, Senior State Attorney, then, Principal State Attorney, until he went to work with the Commission of Inquiry set up by the NRM government in the Prime Minister’s office.

After that, he was appointed Counsel to the Inspectorate of Government, when that office was set up. He was promoted to the Director, Legal Affairs, in the IGG’s office. When he retired from the IGG’s office, he went into private practice until when he was elected MP for Nakasongola Constituency which he normally referred to as Palestine; because there is milk and honey.
