The Chief of Defense Forces has ordered for the arrest and subsequent punishment of soldiers who beat up journalists as they covered protests in Kampala.

In a statement issued by the UPDF spokesman Brig Richard Karemire, the army leadership was appalled by the actions of the soldiers.

The statement follows protests in different parts of the country between the security forces and the public over the detention of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine. During the riots, several journalists were attacked by security forces, beaten up and others briefly detained.
James Akena, a photographer working for the foreign news agency Reuters was beaten by soldiers, arrested and detained for several hours as he covered the ‘Free Bobi Wine’ political protests in Kampala.
