The former Inspector General of Police Gen Edward Kale Kayihura has been granted bail a week after he was charged with failing to protect war materials, failing to supervise police officers and abetting kidnap.

Peter Kabatsi, one of his lawyers told the court that there were special reasons as to why Kayihura deserved bail, one of them being his age of 62 years which has been proved to be advanced age and deserving of bail in previous cases at different courts.

Kavuma (R) and Mugira stood surety for Kale

Two influential UPDF generals; Maj Gen Sam Kavuma and Maj Gen James Mugira stood surety for the former IGP.

“His health condition should be considered because according to his medical report, needs to go for further diagnosis and possible medication that cannot be done within the confines of his detention,” said the lawyers.

Gen Kayihura’s lawyers also argued that he has never been convicted of any crime.

The court granted the former IGP bail but told him not to leave the districts of Wakiso and Kampala.
