NTV journalist Herbert Zziwa was arrested while covering the fracas in Arua

The Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU) has today called on the Ugandan authorities to ensure the safety of journalists reporting on the Arua by-election.

“Media outlets and rights groups have reported that journalists in Arua have been assaulted and detained by security forces and that equipment has been confiscated,” said FCAU is a statement sent to theUgandan.

The journalist’s body demands that authorities must release or charge all journalists detained in Arua, provide access to suitable medical care for those detained and investigate allegations of assaults on the media by security forces.

“In particular, the police should immediately and unconditionally release NTV journalists Herbert Zziwa and Ronald Muwanga. FCAU stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the Ugandan media. It is essential that journalists are able to freely and independently report current,” FCAU says in a statement.
