Police have arrested officers that inflicted life threatening wounds on Kamwenge mayor, Mr Godfrey Byamukama who is accused of participating in the killing of AIGP Felix Kaweesi.
This is a huge U turn after Police Spokesman Asan Kasingye issued a statement recently aying that police had not tortured Byamukama.
The arrest now confirms the fact that the police actually tortured the Kamwenge politician.
Mr Kasingye who was speaking to crime reporters said that those who were involved in the acts of torture had been identified and apprehended.
“The officers who inflicted injuries on Mr Byamukama have been arrested and have been subjected to professional police unit for the investigations,” said Mr Kasingye.
He added that the officers, four in number will be prosecuted “for acting outside the acceptable standards and the law of this country.”
The police spokesman who is already receiving a backlash from online subscribers noted that “whoever tortures a suspect will not be spared by the Anti-Torture laws in Uganda.
“Nobody will hide behind various liabilities instead he will be charged individually,” said Mr Kasingye.
Mr Byamukama’s pictures have been circulating on social media, something that could have forced police to act upon the officers involved.
