President Museveni in his capacity as Head of State has issued a directive to have all telephone numbers that had been switched to be reinstated immediately.
The President who is currently in Arusha Tanzania on official visit used his social media platform to announce that Ugandans should be allowed to verify their sim cards until August 2017.
“I have agreed to this proposal on condition that the new deadline will be respected. SIM card registration will therefore run until 30/8/2017,” the president tweeted.
The president stated in another tweet: “Ministry of ICT and other concerned government agencies are authorized to allow this new window. I ask Ugandans to take this exercise seriously.
There had controversy over the May 19 deadline with Parliament moving a motion to extend the deadline for a year to allow Ugandans register and or verify their sim cards.
However the ICT minister Frank Tumwebaze together with other enforcement agencies defied parliament and switched off unverified sim cards although those who had registered appeared to cry foul on social media for erroneously being switched off.
Parliament had vowed to impeach Mr Tumwebaze over contempt of the August House.
