Philip Wokorach

Philip Wokorach currently the face of Ugandan rugby has written to Heathens RFC and Rugby Cranes teammates and fans to once again stick together as he reflected on the good time they had together this past year.

Speaking more as a supporter of the the Kyandondo based club he has come to love, the freshly recruited Kabras Sugar RFC (Kenya Cup champions) player spoke with passion about the challenges ahead and the highs and lows of fanaticism.

“Most of the players at the club have been my childhood friends and mentors so I have always felt at home. We were basically family and I wish them all the best,” Wokorach said.

The youngster left Kampala on Monday after helping his boyhood club overcome arch-rivals Kobs, touching in the second half – as his side won 33-17.

The winger has gone to Kabras Sugar for a third time after featuring  for them in 2014 before returning to Uganda and then back to Kabras during the 2016 national sevens circuit.

Wokos’ first match for Kabras Sugar will be against Mwamba RFC in the Kenya premiership on January 14.

Philips message to his fans and teammates

Wokorach had a stellar 2016 for both Hima Cement Heathens and the Rugby Cranes Sevens

When no one gave the Rugby Cranes Sevens a chance at the Africa Cup in September, Wokorach stood tall as they beat the much fancied Kenya and Namibia to win a first continental title.

His attachment and importance to the Kyandondo game is best described by NTV Sports Editor Robert Madoi!

“Before conjuring up a burgeoning rugby career replete with absurdities (twice fracturing his leg) and brilliances (take a pick from the showreel of chip and chase tries), Wokorach lodged a few years as a ball boy, doing pretty much everything that the Nago boys (as the unprivileged lads hailing from Naguru godown refer to themselves) do at the rugby clubs of Kyadondo and Legends. This after tag rugby taught him the ropes of the sport.”

“Tag rugby graduates such as Wokorach have made a vital impression on Ugandan rugby by ensuring that its graph gets back on an upward curve. They have quite a domineering presence in both the men’s 15s and sevens national teams. Relying on them and the dwindling pool of Kampala-based players nevertheless tears the lid off a Pandora’s box and releases nothing but trouble.”

Yesterday at Lugogo Tennis Club, Wokorach was voted by the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA), the male rugby player of year and is in the final three for Sportsman of the year as well.
