Beloved Miss Uganda 1971 dies

Television star, rally driver, businesswoman and former Miss Uganda Charlote Ssali died Friday morning in Namirembe, Kampala after a battle with cancer, one of her relatives has announced in a message to TheUgandan.

Ms Ssali over four decades ago and a lady to this day, walked away with the beauty crown.

Long before the Miss Uganda organisers began requiring contestants to wear bikinis and cover themselves with tonnes of makeup, the former beauty queen wowed Ugandans when she said, “Beautiful people are expensive. Beauty contests not only reveal God’s beauty but also reveal how clever the participant is.”

In addition, she was actively involved journalism and worked as news anchor at the sole broadcaster of the time, Uganda Television.

Ms Ssali was in 2015 among the 371 people drawn from the public service, UPDF, Police, journalists, sports women and civilians and awarded medals by President Museveni for their service to Uganda during the Liberation day celebrations in Soroti district.

She worked with contemporaries like Jimmy Dean, Daniel Kyazze as a continuity announcer at Uganda Television in the mid 1970s and early 1980s.

Her funeral service is going to take place tomorrow 12pm at Watoto North and there after the burial at Kasenge, off Mityana road at 4pm.

Ms. Ssali is survived by three daughters Norah, Barbara and an elder one who relocated to the United States of America.

RIP Charlote Ssali.
