VOLLEYBALL: Uganda’s Okello spurs Bulgarian side to 4th win

Ugandan international Daudi Okello continued his splendid form in Europe with a home win against 9th placed Minyor Pernik Volleyball Club in the Bulgarian National Volleyball Super league over the weekend.

The diagonal hitter was top scorer in match with 25 points; 3 aces from service, 2 block kills and 20 on spikes. Okello served 18 times with 6 errors on the night.

Marek Union Ivkoni started strongly and quickly by winning the first set 25-16 in front of their home fans. they returned with the same zeal to win set 2 25:22.

However the script of the third set changed when despite leading 22:20, complacency in defence by Nayden Naydenov coached Marek Union, allowed their cross town rival to wrestle the set 23:25.

Marek Union started the 4th set on a high note 8:5 at the first technical timeout but Minyor Pernik led by utility player Martin Simeonov led 16:15 at the second time out. It was neck and neck till 22:20 when Okello’s prowess in attack was called to action to salvage 3 points for Marek Union.

‘We will keep fighting as a team till the end of the season, individually I am working on my defence skills so as to play better,” Daudi Okello told TheUgandan on phone.

Marek Union are now 7th on the log wih 10 points after 4 wins and 5 losses in the National Super league. This is Okello’s 4th win in 6 games having missed 3 games at the start of the season due to work permit technicalities.

Okello’s next game will be at home on 9 December against 4th placed Pirin who won 3: 2 (17:25 25:18, 14:25, 25:22, 15:12) against Levski Sofia in their last game.
