Four worshippers perish in Mbarara car accident

Four people have died while 30 sustained life threatening injuries when a canter lorry tipped them off the truck at Kateebe Kakiika mbarara District in the wee hours of Sunday morning 15, January 2017.

A truck carrying at least 60 Christians overturned and rolled several times at Kateebe Primary School 10 miles off Mbarara town killing three people on spot, one died while at Mbarara regional referral hospital.

The Christians were returning from Yesu Ahurire community prayer center Karama where they had gone for prayers.

The accident spot is about 15 kilometeres from Mbarara town from Ibanda.

Rwizi region police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi attributed the accident to reckless driving on the side of the truck driver who failed to control the vehicle on the slope of Kateebe primary school.

“A vehicle registration number UAY 517D tipper carrying worshipers from Karama in mbarara district to Buhweju district rolled several times at Kateebe primary school and killed 3 of them on the spot,” MrSsenkumbi said.

He added that police is still looking for the driver of the truck escaped immediately following the fatal accident.

Ssenkumbi said that the driver was aware  that he was using a wrong vehicle to transport people and decided to dodge traffic police using short-cuts while driving at a high speed that led to greasily accident.

“The driver was driving recklessly and at a high speed. We are still searching for him,” said the police officer.

Mbarara regional referral hospital director Celestine Barigye said the hospital has over 50 personnel who were able to handle the situation despite the overwhelming number of casualties.
