The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda ,The Most Rev Stanley Ntagali has blamed the increased land conflicts in the country on the rich people who use their influence and wealth to deprive the poor of their land.
Archbishop Ntagali made the remarks at Bucence Church of Uganda in Nyakagyeme sub county in Rukungiri district where he is currently on pastoral visit ahead of consecration and enthronement of new Bishop of North Kigezi diocese Rev Canon Benon Magezi slated for tomorrow Jan 8th 2017.
He observed that the rich are now in the habit of forging land titles to take over the land of the poor and this has escalated the conflicts in the country.
Ntagali asked the government to enforce the rights of the poor and protect them from deprivations saying that most of the people own customary land with no land titles.
Ntagali however advised the people who own land under customary basis should make efforts to have their land surveyed and get land titles to protect themselves from land grabbers.
Meanwhile thousands of Christians lined up on the road from Kebisoni to Rukungiri yesterday to welcome and receive the Bishop elect Benon Magezi who returned from United Kingdom where he has been for a 3 months retreat ahead of his consecration and enthronement.
Magezi becomes the 5th Bishop of North Kigezi diocese replacing the outgoing Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwire who clocked the mandatory retirement age of 65 years. North Kigezi diocese was curved out of Kigezi diocese in 1981.
